Wedding Supplier Afternoon Tea

On Sunday 16th September, local Bristol wedding suppliers are invited to
afternoon tea in one of Bristol's hidden wedding venues.

Arnos Vale will have free music, cakes, tea and tours around the buildings and general site. They are licensed to hold both Anglican wedding and civil ceremonies and can hold ceremonies from 2 people right up to 106. They also have on site caterers who can cater for up to 80 people for a banqueting style reception or up to 220 for a chilled out and relaxed buffet option.

Arnos Vale know that getting married in a cemetery might seem like an odd idea, but how many wedding already take place in chapels and churches sat amongst grave stones.

Arnos Vale say "This is an unusual, unique, funky, tranquil, beautiful, scenic venue and offers something a little different to the norm! If you have a couple looking for somewhere a bit different and a venue with a difference but without compromising on location or surroundings then please come along on the 16th September and find out more about Arnos Vale for yourself."

So, if you want to come along then call Sarah on 0117 9719117 (extn 202) or email [email protected] leaving your name, business type/name and how many are going to be attending with you.

Bristol Brides to Be...Lets Be Sociable

Did you know that Bristol Wedding News is also on Facebook and Twitter? We'd love you to follow us on Twitter or come and "Like" us on Facebook (it's nice to be liked). I launched this blog back in June and I have been so delighted with how it's already grown to over 3000 page views per month and is increasing all of the time, so I thought I'd share some information about the history of Bristol Wedding News.

I started writing Bristol Wedding News as I found it hard to find information about Bristol Weddings and also because, as a Bristol Wedding supplier, I realised it was hard for small businesses to tell Brides what they are up to. Wedding magazine advertising costs hundreds or even thousands of pounds for one small advert and wedding fairs around £100 to £150 to exhibit.

This makes it hard for all of the talented and hard working self employed and often small Wedding businesses to promote themselves, especially when working from home or trying to grow with a small start up budget or work around families. Like me, many Bristol Wedding suppliers that I have met are local women who are following their dreams and trying to build successful careers.

This blog was designed as a way to connect Bristol Brides with great local suppliers and also national suppliers that they can order from online but may not know about. If you regularly read Bristol Wedding News and have found it useful in planning your Wedding, I'd love to hear from you.

Also if you have any feedback about what could improve or what you'd like to see on here, I'd love to hear your views. You can get in touch by email, comment on the posts, comment on our facebook group or message me on Twitter.  However you choose to get in touch, I look forward to hearing from you.

Don't forget that once you have tied the knot, you can send in your Wedding photos to be featured on these pages too. Thank you to all of those who have read and contributed to Bristol Wedding News so far. Let's work together to make it a fantastic resource for any couples getting Married in the Bristol area.

Venue Spotlight: Byzantium

If you are having a Wedding on a reasonably tight budget, you won't want to spend a fortune on hiring a venue. Byzantium could be the perfect solution for you as it has no venue hire charge, just an agreed minimum spend if you want exclusive use. If you haven't eaten at Byzantium before then you're in for a treat when you enter the Moroccan inspired lounge area downstairs that makes the perfect space for a Wedding reception.

They are licenced for civil ceremonies and charge £300-£400 to marry there. The restaurant can hold up to 120 guests for a sit down meal. There is a great choice of food as you would expect with any restaurant from buffets to set menus and their famous lanterns offering six mini starters or desserts.

To find out more visit their website here where you can download a wedding pack

Venue Spotlight: Kingscote Barn

Kingscote Barn sits in a gorgeous rural location close to Wotton-Under-Edge and Tetbury surrounded by fields and country lanes. The barn was originally part of the farm that also occupies the land and it was specifically converted to become a venue for Weddings, conferences and events.

                                            Wedding Reception

There is also accommodation on site where the smaller surrounding barns have also been converted, meaning plenty of room for the bridal party to stay.

                                           Front view of the barn

The barn really does combine the best of modern and traditional with original stone and oak combined with a light and airy feel. Kingscote Barn provides you with an onsite Events Manager to coordinate your day and thought they do not have a restaurant on site, they offer you a choice of four caterers giving you plenty of choice for your big day.

Venue Spotlight: Brunel's Old Station

There are hundreds of wedding venues in Bristol but getting married at Temple Meads may not immediately spring to mind as a romantic location. Hiring a stately home or having a wedding in a conference venue might be spectacular or convenient, but your wedding photos might not be much different to those of other brides.
Luckily Bristol offers the opportunity to get married in truly atmospheric and historic venues such as the SS Great Britain and Brunel’s Old Station.

While both were designed by master architect Isambard Brunel, the latter has the distinction of being one of the oldest railway stations in the world having opened in 1940 as part of the Great Western Railway.
Today this Passenger Shed which is ideally located next to Bristol Temple Meads station (just think how easy it will be for your wedding guests to get there) is fondly known as Brunel’s Old Station.
The setting is truly stunning with grade 1 listed Victorian architecture and the organisers have done a great job of making it into a fully functional Bristol Conference Venue.

So why not day "I do" beneath sweeping celings in a hall filled with natural light? Brunel's Old Station has been the site of magnificent achievements in the past and will contine to be a special Bristol venue in the present and future.

Brunel's Old Station can hold Wedding receptions for up to 700 people so if you are having a large scale celebrration it's perfect. Visit the website for more info and to see the gallery and packages.

Venue Spotlight: Have your Reception Anywhere with a Wedding Yurt

If you are looking for something a bit different in terms of a Wedding Venue or you dream about spending your Wedding night "glamping" under the stars, then read on. Wedding Yurts allow you total flexibility in choosing your reception venue as they can be used in your garden, in a field or in the grounds of an existing Wedding Venue. They can also provide accommodation for you or your guests.

These stunning shots were taken at Maunsell House by  Antonia Wozencraft, the styling by the girls at Ava Event Styling and the wedding dresses, shoes and jewellery by the Wedding Club.

Here's what Lizzie from Wedding Yurts has to say about this brilliant new concept,

My partner James and I have recently launched our new business Wedding Yurts here in Bristol. Our wedding yurts have been designed to host intimate wedding receptions and are the perfect alternative to a traditional marquee. The yurts are hand~crafted out of sweet chestnut wood, covered in cream canvas and really enhance any special event. The Wedding Yurts can be podded together to create a unique space with the capacity to sit fifty guests for a wedding reception or seventy guests dancing and lounging at the wedding party.

The 20ft yurt can be used for a party with a 12ft yurt attached for the bar and another 12ft yurt the kitchen, or a 20ft yurt for hosting a banquet with a kitchen yurt or crèche attached.
Our boutique yurt accommodation is luxurious and we have a honeymoon yurt beautifully decorated for a magical wedding night under the stars.

We have a mobile kitchen which can be set up inside the 12ft yurt, wooden dance floors, furniture, sound system, lighting, soft furnishings and decorations, we also know lots of very talented and creative people to help create your special day.

The yurts are wonderfully versatile and can be erected inside or outdoors, in a field, a garden or your chosen wedding venue, a unique venue ideal for celebrations and intimate gatherings.
We deliver all around the country and depending on what you hire determines what mode of transport we use. In the yurts Mongolian homeland, the Mongols would load the yurts onto the backs of two camels! fortunately we are lucky to have four wheels.

Personally I love yurts because they are beautiful and perfectly designed to create a circular structure with extraordinary stability and a feeling of spaciousness. A tent which is almost a house, I love the fact they can be erected almost anywhere, in secret locations in the woods, near a beach, in a park or simply in your back garden offering a private, warm, beautiful space to share with friends and family.

I love the big wooden doors and most of all the window located right at the top in the centre of the roof letting the sunlight flood in during the day and at night time is perfect for viewing the stars. Traditionally the central wheel was called the eye to heaven and the brides dowry would almost always include a yurt.

The yurts can also be erected indoors transforming a space, making a square room round and dome like, we have strings of golden l.e.d lights to decorate the ceiling which looks and feels magical.

The Story of a Vintage Car Company -Ken's Kars

Today we are delighted that Wayne Smith from Ken's Cars is sharing his heartwarming story about keeping  his late Grandad's passion for vintage cars alive. We particularly love the black and white pictures of Ken working on his cars in the 50s.

Helping my Grandad, Ken Harmer, from an early age and always having an interest in old cars, it seemed natural that when he unexpectedly died in 2006, I took over the running of his vintage wedding car company, Kens Kars, which is based in Chipping Sodbury.

Grandad set up the company in the early 1980’s as a sideline to his hobby of restoring and driving vintage cars. He had a special affection for big Austin’s which I am sure stems from using them in the 1950’s and 60’s running Chipping sodbury’s 24 Hour taxi service ‘Harmers Taxis’ with his father Albert. I remember him relaying stories about taking the local Darts team around in an Austin 18 shooting brake, and the story of when one of the cars was totally covered by snow along the Horton to Hawkesbury road.

                                  Kens Kars

Originally Ken’s Kars started with just two 1930’s Austin 18’s, both royal blue and black, but as time passed, and Grandad restored more cars, the fleet grew, finally ending up with 7 Austin 18’s. In 1988 it was Grandads son, my uncle Roy that introduced the first American car into the fleet, this was the 1928 Studebaker, and later the 1932 Oldsmobile joined this. Disaster struck on August 9th 2005 when there was a fire at our premises and 4 of the cars were totally destroyed in the blaze, not being disheartened by this it was a case of the show must go on.

                                         Kens Kars ivory Austins

A year later Grandad passed away and it was at this point that I put myself forward as the person to keep the wedding cars going and take over the running of the company along with my Nan. Since being in the driving seat – so to speak- I have replaced Roy’s 1928 Studebaker with one of my own, and also added another, this time a 1930 Studebaker.

                                          Austin wedding cars

We now run 6, 1920’s and 30’s, cars and are available all year round for weddings and film work. Anyone interested in enquiring about our cars can contact us on 01454 313194 or through our Website
